Underwater Filming: Tips for capturing subaquatic wonders

Underwater filming presents an incredible opportunity to capture the beauty of the underwater world and create unforgettable memories. Whether you're a beginner or experienced diver, preparation, technique, and equipment are key to capturing underwater wonders in the best possible way. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your underwater filming experience:

1. Choose the Right Camera:

Before diving in, select a camera or waterproof housing that suits your needs and experience level. Consider features such as resolution, image stabilization, and adjustable lighting options.

You don't need a massive bulky camera with strobe lights for most of your shots, but if you want to capture super-fine photos, then underwater housing, a DSLR camera, strobes, and "flood insurance" is what you need.

I still take most of my underwater photos with a Nikon D3200 ( 24.2 MP DX from 2016 ) and GoPro 7. 

2. Familiarize Yourself with Equipment:

Before diving, familiarize yourself with your equipment, including camera settings, functions, and controls. Ensure you are comfortable handling the gear to avoid unnecessary issues underwater.

A lot of times, I see people jump into the water, and three minutes into the dive, they realize they forgot to put the SD card in or that the battery is low.

3. Plan Your Shoot:

Before diving, consider locations and subjects you want to capture. Plan your shoot in advance to make the most of your time underwater and avoid missing key moments.

If you have the chance, scout the location or gather some information about it. Then, make a plan in your head for what you want to try to do and what equipment you need.

4. Mind the Lighting:

Lighting is crucial for quality underwater photos and videos. Use natural light whenever possible and consider additional lighting or strobes to enhance the quality of images in darker conditions.

Light can change in a couple of minutes, so be quick in setting up your camera and lighting. Avoid wasting time overthinking it;

5. Master Filming Techniques:

Learn and practice basic filming techniques, including steady camera holding, approaching subjects, and controlling depth of field. Experiment with different angles and perspectives to create engaging and dynamic shots.

6. Be Environmentally Aware:

When filming underwater, be mindful of your surroundings and behave responsibly towards marine life and the environment. Stay clear of sensitive ecosystems and refrain from touching or disturbing marine organisms.

Most marine life is shy and not very friendly towards cameras, so respect that. Avoid moving them around to get a "better" photo. How would you feel if someone was constantly grabbing and moving you from one place to another.

7. Prepare for Conditions:

Prepare for changes in diving conditions, including currents, visibility, and water temperature. Wear appropriate thermal protection and always carry a reserve of air and energy for unforeseen situations.

When things go from bad to worse while diving, you need to think on your feet(or fins). Have a spare retractor/carabiner/bolt snap to put your camera away so that your hands are free to do what needs to be done. For a GoPro, I suggest having a floatable handle and a string around your hand.

It's better for it to float than to sink.

8. Ensure Safety:

Safety is always a priority when diving. Don't let filming distract you from being attentive to your surroundings and your own safety. Adhere to prescribed safety protocols and diving rules.

Usually, when I'm taking photos, I prefer to dive alone or have a buddy who will keep an eye out for me without getting in the way of the shots. Many times, I will dive shallower than the planned maximum depth to save some air, just in case there is a good shot that comes up, usually towards the end of the dive

Additionally, for those using GoPro cameras, familiarize yourself with their underwater settings and accessories such as waterproof cases and mounting options. Utilizing underwater lighting systems, such as LED dive lights or underwater strobes, can significantly enhance the quality of your underwater footage by providing proper illumination in various underwater environments.

Filming underwater can be challenging yet incredibly rewarding.
